I ensure the gimbal is in place (level) inside the cover hood, hook the front and then engage the tangs behind the gimbal. A delicate process, but once in place the gimbal is secure. The gimbal guard is the one that stops it doing it calibration dance. So yes you are in the clear and can leave it on during flights. I've done that too many times with my Mavic Pro, turned it on without removing either. Then I freak out, turn it off and remove them.
